We’re back with Episode 6 of Channel Corner with James Drake, and this month we’re shining a spotlight on apprenticeships in celebration of National Apprenticeship Week this February.
In this episode we asked James:
“Why do you think apprenticeships are important for a company?”
As a former apprentice himself, James has seen first-hand the long-term value apprenticeships bring, not only to individuals, but to businesses as a whole. He began his career in telecoms in 1991 at KCOM as an apprentice, and many of the skills he developed then have stayed with him throughout his career, right through to running Eclipse Wholesale for over 20 years.
Below, James shares his key reasons for why apprenticeships are important for companies.
1. Alternative Academic Route
Not everyone wants to follow a traditional academic path such as full-time university. Apprenticeships offer a middle ground, combining practical, hands-on experience with structured learning and theory. They allow apprentices to earn while they learn, gaining real workplace experience alongside qualifications. Apprenticeships can even progress all the way to degree level, allowing apprentices to achieve a university qualification while continuing to work.
2. Apprenticeship Revamp
Apprenticeship numbers have declined by around 40% over the past decade, but the scheme has recently undergone a significant revamp. These changes include shorter programme durations, with some courses reduced from 18 months, making apprenticeships more accessible and better aligned with business needs.
3. Apprenticeship Levy
Many businesses in the UK are already paying into the Apprenticeship Levy, so why not make use of it? Using levy funds to invest in apprenticeships allows companies to develop talent internally, rather than letting those funds go to waste. It’s an effective way to invest in skills and long-term growth for their company.
4. Practical Skills
Unlike purely academic routes, apprenticeships prioritise real, practical skills, with apprentices learning the role by actually doing the job. They gain experience that benefits them both personally and professionally, while also providing immediate value to the business.
5. Structured Training Programme
Apprenticeships provide a clear, structured training programme, combining learning, on-the-job experience and ongoing support. Apprentices are guided throughout their course and can access support not only from their employer, but also from their training provider, helping to ensure long-term success.
At Eclipse Wholesale, apprenticeships have played a key role in building our team across technical, marketing and sales roles. We’re proud to continue supporting our team through ongoing training and development.
